Nordic 14 Premier Girls lose opening game
Nordic 14 Premier Girls soccer team lost a close 2-1 game vs West Pines United from Florida in todays opening round of the Y league National Finals being held in Tampa Bay, Florida.
After some adjustments to the heat and level of play, the Nordic girls gave a very determined second half performance and can feel very unlucky to not at least gained a tie from this game.
In 80 degree heat, the West Pines United team adjusted alot quicker than the Nordic girls and after some early pressure, got the goal they deserved after 20 mins. Despite the early set-back, this sparked Nordic into life and the remaining 15 minutes was all Nordic who spent the rest of the half peppering the West Pines goal-keeper.
Half-time couldn't have come any earlier for the Florida team, as straight from the opening kick-off in the second half, West Pines doubled their lead with a quickfire goal. Again, this sparked the Nordic girls into life and they were justly rewarded 20 minutes into the second half when an Erin Turner pass found Addison Wenner wide open 20 yards our from goal and she very calmly put the goal away to make it 2-1!...Game on!...for the remaining 15 minutes, it was end to end stuff with both teams having chances. Haley Forkey came up big with a 1 on 1 save on a West Pines forward and Lindsey Bushey nearly claimed the tie-ing goal in the final seconds with a 25 yard shot that the West Pines goal-keeper just managed to hold onto.
Nordic has a chance to redeem themselves tommorrow (Sat 11/21) when they take on Mequon United from Wisconsin in a 1pm game.

Girls Organize own Soccer Camp
A group of Nordic Colchester girls turned themselves from soccer players into soccer coaches this summer.
Four 10- and 11-year-olds from the Colchester Point neighborhood organized the Backyard Soccer Camp of 2009, a week of skills and drills for the younger kids in the neighborhood.
A dozen 4- to 6-year-olds signed up and spent two hours each day last week in a formal, structured soccer setting in the backyard of the Baillargeon home on Horizon View Road.
"They went around the neighborhood. They had permission slips and signup sheets. They took it extremely seriously," said Beth Baillargeon, a parent of one of the coaches. "They had it all right down to a tee."
The coaches - Jenna Baillargeon, Adrianne Colley, Clara Johnson and Brenna McMannon - are all veterans of local competitive soccer teams. In making out a20daily schedule of drills and activities, they drew on their experience as players.
"I've been watching my coaches," Johnson said, "and I told them what my coaches tell me."
For the campers, it was their first experienced with organized soccer.
"We're teaching them how to dribble and pass," Johnson said.
The four coaches last summer put on a neighborhood dog show. They were looking for something different to do as a group this year. They started planning the camp in June.
"We had a notebook and we wrote down all our plans and a schedule," Johnson said. "We decided a theme for each day."
They made a flier to recruit campers and collected a $25 fee. They also made "Backyard Soccer 2009" T-shirts and served refreshments during each practice.
"It’s kept the girls busy," Beth Baillargeon said.

LeClair chooses Richmond
Nordic U19 Premier Girls player Natalie LeClair has verbally accepted a full scholarship to play at the University of Richmond beginning in the fall of 2009.
The Essex High school senior forward, who was named the Vermont player of the year by Gatorade last year, said she had whittled her list of possible destinations to Richmond and the University of Vermont, and the lure of warmer weather was one of the final factors. The South Hero resident said she also has attended soccer camp at the Division I Virginia school.
LeClair, 17, said the offer came from Richmond coach Peter Albright, who played at Johnson State College and later coached at his alma mater for 15 seasons. She said Albright has connections in Essex and saw her playing for Nordic at Regionals a couple years ago in Maine.
LeClair, a two-time Burlington Free Press all-state selection, said she will enter the university undecided on a major. She said Albright told her he expects her to see plenty of action early in her career.
The scholarship offer is subject to LeClair being accepted at Richmond and meeting NCAA requirements.
LeClair is also an All-New England selection of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

L to R: Sebastian Vasquez, Stephen Akiki, Andrew Akiki, Aaron Shapiro, Matt Brien, Ken Krupa, Brett Nelson, Jordy Corrales, Stiles Alpeter, Danny Samardzic, Roshi Brooklyn, Coach Ross Duncan
A group of Nordic Soccer Club players recently completed a 10 day football tour of England, where they trained, played English teams, watched several professional matches and experienced England.
A group of rising U13 and U14 boys as well as guest players, parents and Coach Ross Duncan flew from Boston Logan to London Heathrow where they started a busy itinerary which saw them have two training sessions with Ross and XLTravel coaches, play four matches against youth teams, train for almost three hours with an Everton FC Academy coach at the Everton training facility, watch two Emirates Cup matches (Real Madrid vs. Hamburg and Arsenal vs. Juventus), visit Sheffield United's Bramall Lane and the Sheffield Youth Academy, tour Old Trafford and join almost 70,000 people to watch Manchester United play against Juventus.
The group also had several sightseeing stops, including a tour of London's sights (Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, the Household Cavalry, 10 Downing Street, Westminster, House of Parliament, Big Ben, lunch on River Thames), visits to Piccadilly Circus and Harrod's, trips via the Underground (London's subway, usually just called "the tube"), a walking tour of the old Roman town of Chester, a stop in Liverpool and the place where the Beatles started (the Cavern Club) and riding the Millennium Eye located on the River Thames.
The team of Stiles Alpeter, Matt Brien, Brett Nelson, Andrew Akiki, Roshi Brooklyn, Ken Krupa, Danny Samardzic and Aaron Shapiro were joined by guest players Stephen Akiki (keeper), Jordy Corrales (from Florida) and Sebastian Vasquez (from Boston). Nordic parents and siblings joining the group were Geoff/Maria Akiki, Lynn Alpeter, Dave/Kathy and Alexis Brien, Dave/Janet and Karen Krupa, Mark/Kathy and Jessica Nelson, Shelagh Shapiro as well as Coach Ross Duncan. While the group was there, they met up with Nordic Coach Jim ("James") Goudie and his son Matthew who played in one of the matches.
The group's many great experiences enabled them to come back home with great memories, new friendships, many pictures and lots of new soccer jerseys. XL Travel Soccer Tours did a great job building and guiding the Nordic group on a fantastic itinerary.

We have had a successful year to say the least and I'm proud that our club has surged forward for a second consecutive year. Our teams competed well at the State Cup, as well as at various tournaments throughout the year, but more importantly, in most cases our kids and teams showed growth and steady improvement. The players were selected based on their play during the past season in the New England division of the Y league and were recommended by regional scouts and coaches. Players will attend a 4 day camp at Cocoa Beach Expo Soccer facility in January and February of next year and will train and play with the top players from through-out the country under the scrutiny of US National Team coaching staff with the chance to be selected to a Y league National team or even the chance to be invited into a US National Youth team squad. |

Approximately 120 teams play in each session. The indoor center also conducts Junior Academies for children ages 5-12, averaging 100 children per session.
